Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig: A Slow Start, Then a Rout
On Champions League Matchday 3, Madrid arrived after beating Inter and pulling off a comeback in Rome. However, the 4-1 scoreline hides a tense first half.
Leipzig arrived with a strange record: four home wins and four away defeats. A 6-1 loss to Bayern had also stung them recently. Even so, Martín Demichelis changed only three players, one in each line.
José Mourinho, meanwhile, kept his core group intact. Vinicius also started despite his slump. Rüdiger and Carreras joined the XI, and Camavinga paired with Bernardo Silva in midfield.
Courtois Saves Keep Madrid Alive Before Silva Strikes
Gradually, the visitors grew into the game. Leipzig created the clearest chances. Rómulo turned sharply and fired, but Courtois produced a miraculous save.
Later, he denied Nkunku one on one. However, Leipzig lacked the finishing touch. Vinicius also tested Vandevoordt with a trademark burst.
Güler and Mbappé Take Over After the Break
Moreover, Valverde raced up and down the right flank all night. Bellingham pulled strings through the middle. Leipzig’s defence could not handle the constant pressure.
In possession, Bernardo Silva moved into the more advanced role. Diomande started on the bench, which spared Mourinho a tricky debate. Arda Güler now looks like a genuine cornerstone. He was the brightest Madrid player from the first whistle.
Yan Diomande Writes the Final Chapter Against His Old Club
Three goals in four minutes turned a tight night into a rout. However, Madrid’s grip never really loosened after the second goal.
Diomande joined Madrid this summer from Leipzig for a record fee. Therefore, his assist and his volley felt personal. Consequently, Madrid holds nine points from nine and enter Sunday’s Clásico flying.
Why Madrid Won: Speed, Bench Timing and Movement
Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig became a speed contest after the opener. Madrid thrived on that, and Leipzig’s shell cracked. Therefore, Madrid’s runners had an open field after the break.
Both Madrid’s first and second goals came from tap-ins after smart movement. That detail says plenty about their sharpness in the box.
Mourinho started Vinicius, as he had promised. However, the Brazilian had a quiet night and heard whistles. Therefore, Mourinho replaced him with Diomande.
That change paid off with two dribbles and a superb volley. Brahim Díaz also delivered the through ball that created the fourth. Moreover, Cucurella entered to boos from German fans still angry about Euro 2024.
