Toluca had the lead, the crowd and the momentum. Then Tijuana snatched it all back. Toluca vs Tijuana ended 2-2 at Estadio Nemesio Díez on Matchday 14. Yael Padilla struck late to save the Xolos.
Meanwhile, Sebastián Abreu watched the rescue act from outside the technical area. As a result, the Red Devils stretched their winless run to five games. Both camps left with plenty to argue about.
Toluca vs Tijuana: A Home Draw That Feels Like a Loss
Toluca dropped points at home on a night they wanted three. Antonio Mohamed’s men needed a win to chase second place in the Liga MX Apertura 2026 table. However, Chivas beat Necaxa, so that door closed.
Moreover, the draw stretches the Red Devils’ winless run to five matches. Considering Toluca’s stature, that streak stings. Nemesio Díez, the famed Bombonera, usually feels like a fortress. Tijuana, meanwhile, left with a valuable point. The Xolos de Tijuana now sit ninth with 17 points. Therefore, the Liguilla race is tightening for Abreu’s group.
Both teams created chances early. Toluca threatened first, and Tijuana answered with a Manoel effort that flashed just wide. However, neither side found a breakthrough before the 38th minute.
Padilla's 60 Meter Run Cracks Toluca Open
Toluca’s back line could not cut off the run. Then Padilla slid the pass to Elías Manoel. Manoel beat goalkeeper Luis García Palomera for the opener.
Tijuana’s plan looked to simply absorb pressure, then break at pace. Manoel’s earlier miss had already warned the hosts. As a result, the Xolos walked into halftime ahead. Therefore, Mohamed needed answers from his bench, and he needed them fast.
Mohamed's Substitutions Flip the Second Half
Helinho shaped the whole spell with one assist and one goal. Toluca’s attackers suddenly found space between Tijuana’s lines. Moreover, the Red Devils controlled the rhythm, and the stands erupted. However, Toluca still had roughly 25 minutes to protect that lead.
Abreu's Red Card Stirs Controversy Before Padilla Strikes Again
Manoel opened the scoring in the 38th minute, and Viñas equalized in the 60th. Helinho struck five minutes later, before Padilla levelled in the 75th.
That Abreu red card sparked the loudest debate of the night. Abreu claimed Viñas pulled Padilla’s shirt and tripped him before the goal.
He left his technical area to protest to the fourth official. As a result, referee Joaquín Vizcarra showed him a straight red. VAR reviewed the play, and the goal stood. Moreover, the dismissal left Tijuana without their coach for the closing stretch. Still, the Xolos kept pushing for a goal.
Why Tijuana Refused to Fold
He struck it hard and beat Palomera at the near post. It was 2-2, and the home fans went silent. Padilla, therefore, owned the night. He created the opener with his run and scored the equalizer himself. Moreover, a point at Toluca’s altitude is never easy for a coastal side. In addition, Toluca vs Tijuana showed that this Xolos group has real character.
