Buffalo survived a lost fumble, a late equalizer and an overtime scare. Tyler Bass then drilled the kick that ended the argument at SoFi Stadium.
Bills vs Rams finished 37-34 to the visitors on Monday Night Football. Josh Allen’s rushing power kept the Buffalo Bills moving when passing lanes tightened.
Bills vs Rams turns into a fourth-quarter shootout
On October 12, Los Angeles recovered from a 13-7 halftime deficit and traded touchdowns throughout the fourth quarter. However, Buffalo kept answering through its quarterback and running game. Allen scored on a one yard sneak, and a successful two point conversion made it 27-20. Stafford responded with a touchdown pass to Davante Adams, leveling the score.
Then James Cook’s five yard touchdown put Buffalo ahead with 1:39 remaining. Kyren Williams answered from one yard with five seconds left, forcing overtime.
Those exchanges captured the night neither defense could shut the door when it mattered. Meanwhile, the visitors scored 15 fourth quarter points, while the hosts produced 20.
Buffalo repeatedly regained control without finding the defensive stop needed to close out the game. As a result, each touchdown brought relief rather than certainty. Penalties also interrupted the rhythm, with officials calling 24 across both teams. Still, the mistakes rarely stopped either offense once the game opened up after halftime.
Rousseau rescues Buffalo after Cook's fumble
Khalil Shakir opened overtime with a 57 yard catch and run, putting Buffalo within striking distance. However, Cook lost a fumble on the next snap, handing Los Angeles the ball.
Stafford moved his team into range for Harrison Mevis’ potential winner. Instead, Rousseau broke through and blocked the 48 yard attempt. That play changed Bills vs Rams at the moment Buffalo looked beaten. Allen then scrambled twice to set up Bass’ decisive 45 yard field goal.
Allen supplies the yards when passing stalls
On the ground, Allen finished with 121 rushing yards and a touchdown on ten carries. Moreover, that total marked the second-highest rushing output of his NFL career.
His 210 passing yards came with one touchdown and one interception. Yet the Rams struggled most whenever he escaped pressure and attacked open grass.
Those scrambles kept drives alive despite a difficult night finding receivers. Cook also contributed 111 rushing yards and two scores, giving Buffalo another route through the defense.
Buffalo reaches 4-1 as Los Angeles falls below .500
Buffalo improved to 4-1, while the Los Angeles Rams slipped to 2-3 after another narrow defeat. Meanwhile, Stafford completed 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns.
Puka Nacua caught 17 passes for 138 yards and a score, setting his personal reception record. However, that production could not cover the damage from missed opportunities elsewhere.
Three phases deliver the winning sequence
Rousseau supplied the rescue, but Allen still had to turn it into field position. Then Bass delivered the finish without leaving another possession for Stafford.
Buffalo combined three phases when the result demanded it blocking, advancing and kicking. Meanwhile, its ground game reduced the burden on a passing attack that lacked consistent rhythm.
McVay faces decisions over the kicking unit
Mevis missed a 50 yard attempt wide left during the opening quarter. Later, the blocked overtime kick compounded an expensive night for the unit. Seán McVay subsequently questioned the kicking operation after the defeat. He said the field goal and extra point work had cost his team the game.
